Hill Country on the Blanco
Wimberley sits in Hays County in the Texas Hill Country, with the Blanco River running through town and ranch roads spreading out from RM 12. It is farther from San Antonio than most of our stops, but we make the drive for inspections and replacements. Homes mix older cottages near the square with larger places on oak-covered lots — and a lot of standing seam metal that fits limestone, cedar, and steep Hill Country light.
Rattler Roofing is family-owned and based in San Antonio. Mike Bailey named the company after the Rattlers at Reagan High School and St. Mary’s University. About 70% of our work is roofing; about 30% is remodeling. Call or text (210) 418-ROOF, 7 AM to 7 PM.
Metal country — with shingles still in the mix
Standing seam metal is a frequent choice here. We form double-lock standing seam on site from McElroy Metal coil, fastened with hidden clips so screw heads are not sitting in every panel face. Exposed-fastener panels still appear on shops and some homes; washers dry out in the sun and need attention. See Metal Roofing and the Wimberley metal photos in Recent Work.
Architectural shingles from brands such as GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, and Malarkey remain common on cottages and subdivision homes, including Class 3 and Class 4 impact-rated options. See Roof Replacement. Tile: Tile Roofing. Ventilation under dark roofs: Roof Ventilation.
Oaks shade long roof runs. Valleys clog. Wind lifts edges you cannot see from the porch. After a spring hail or wind storm we walk the roof, photograph every problem, and tell you straight whether you need a repair or a full replacement.
Repair, storms, insurance
Localized roof repair can fix a flashing failure or a few damaged panels. When the system is past that point, we tear off to the deck, replace soft wood we document, and install the new roof with our 10-year workmanship warranty. Stay off the roof after a storm. We document damage for insurance and can meet your adjuster; you file the claim, and we do not waive or rebate deductibles. See Hail Damage Roof Repair, Wind Damage Roof Repair, and Insurance Claims.
Permits in Wimberley
The City of Wimberley requires a building permit for new construction and for most reconstruction or remodeling. Applications and electronic plans go to the city’s permitting email; commercial projects and residential work on slopes over 15% need site-plan review before a permit issues. Outside city limits in unincorporated Hays County, rules differ — we confirm which office covers your address. HOA or deed restrictions can still apply on some properties.
How a job usually runs
Free on-roof inspection with photos (we plan the drive from San Antonio so we are not rushing the walk). Written estimate before work. Tear-offs to the deck on replacements; soft wood photographed and replaced; debris hauled away. On metal jobs we pay special attention to wall flashing, pipe boots, and eaves — the details that show up in our Wimberley gallery. Licensed with the City of San Antonio and other municipalities as required, insured.
Distance, scheduling, and outbuildings
Because Wimberley is a longer drive from our San Antonio base, we schedule inspections so we can spend real time on the roof — not a rushed curb glance. If you have a shop, carport, or guest house on the same property, say so when you call; we can often inspect those roofs on the same trip and give you one clear picture of what needs repair now versus what can wait.
Hill Country weather swings from hail to long dry heat. Sealants and rubber boots cook in the sun; the next storm finds the crack. Regular inspections after major weather keep small metal flashing problems from becoming ceiling stains in a limestone cottage.
