What Hail Does to a Roof

Spring and early summer storms can bring hail to San Antonio and the Hill Country, sometimes with little warning. Hail damage isn’t always easy to see from the ground, but it can shorten a roof’s life and lead to leaks months later.

Shingles

Hail can bruise or crack shingles and knock off the granules that protect them from the sun.

Tile

Hail can crack or chip clay and concrete tile.

Metal roofs

Hail can dent metal panels and trim.

Soft metals and more

Hail dents vents, flashing, gutters and AC units, and it can tear window screens and mark fences and siding.

Signs of Hail Damage

  • Granules in the gutters or at the bottom of downspouts.
  • Dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, AC units or outdoor furniture.
  • Torn window screens or fresh marks on a fence or siding.
  • Dark spots or bruises on shingles.
  • Cracked or broken tiles on a tile roof.
  • New water stains on a ceiling or in the attic.

Please stay off your roof after a storm. A wet or damaged roof is dangerous. Let us do the climbing. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, start with a free roof inspection.

After a Hailstorm: First Steps

1. Stay safe

Watch for debris and stay off the roof.

2. Stop the water

Catch drips in a pan or bucket and move furniture away from leaks. If the roof is open, call us and we can tarp it.

3. Get it inspected

We get up on the roof, photograph what we find and go over the photos with you.

4. Decide about a claim

If there’s hail damage, our insurance claims page explains how the claim works and what to document. If you need help filing your claim, we can walk you through it.

Repair or Replace?

A few damaged shingles can often be repaired. When hail damage is spread across several slopes, a replacement usually makes more sense than fixing it one shingle at a time. Either way, you’ll see the photos before you decide.

A Word About Storm Chasers

After a big hailstorm, out-of-town crews often go door to door. Before you sign anything, check that the company is local, has real reviews and will still be around if something goes wrong. Rattler Roofing is family-owned and based in San Antonio.

In Texas, a contractor can’t waive, pay or rebate your insurance deductible. If someone offers to, that’s a red flag. Our insurance claims page has more on deductibles.

Hail Damage FAQ

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
Most hail damage can’t be seen from the ground. Dents in gutters, vents or an AC unit, or torn window screens, are good clues that the roof was hit too. An on-roof inspection is the best way to know for sure.
How soon should I get my roof inspected after a hailstorm?
As soon as you reasonably can. Hidden damage can turn into leaks over time, and your insurance policy may set a deadline for reporting damage.
Does hail damage always mean I need a new roof?
No. Minor damage can often be repaired. If the damage is spread across the roof, a replacement may be the better fix.
My neighbors are getting new roofs. Does that mean mine is damaged?
Not always. Hail can hit one street harder than the next, and roofs of different ages hold up differently. It’s a good reason to have yours checked, though.
Can you tarp my roof after a hailstorm?
Yes. If hail left your roof open or leaking, call (210) 418-ROOF and we can tarp it to keep water out until it’s repaired.
Will filing a claim raise my insurance rates?
That depends on your insurer and your policy, so ask your agent. We can inspect and photograph the damage first, so you can decide whether filing makes sense.
