A city inside the San Antonio grid
Castle Hills is a small incorporated city in north-central Bexar County, fully enclaved inside Loop 410 near Blanco Road and West Avenue. You can drive from a San Antonio street into Castle Hills without noticing a highway exit — but the city runs its own government, police, and building permits. That matters when you reroof: the paperwork goes to Castle Hills City Hall on Lemonwood Drive, not to San Antonio’s One Stop.
Many homes date from the mid-1900s. Chimneys, multiple valleys, aging shingle layers, and original flashings show up on inspections. Some roofs have already been through more than one overlay. We walk the roof, photograph what is actually wrong, and recommend repair or replacement based on the photos — not a sales script.
Rattler Roofing is family-owned and based in San Antonio. Mike Bailey named the company after the Rattlers at Reagan High School and St. Mary’s University. About 70% of our work is roofing; about 30% is remodeling. Call or text (210) 418-ROOF, 7 AM to 7 PM.
Older roofs, careful recommendations
Architectural shingles are the usual replacement here. We install brands such as GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, and Malarkey, including Class 3 and Class 4 impact-rated options. Every full replacement includes our 10-year workmanship warranty. See Roof Replacement.
Castle Hills code prohibits wooden roofs (wood shingles or shakes). Existing wood roofs cannot be replaced in kind; when more than a minor repair is needed they must be re-roofed with approved noncombustible materials. We will not put wood shakes back on a Castle Hills house.
Metal standing seam and R-panel are options where the look fits. See Metal Roofing. Tile details: Tile Roofing. Hot attic / ventilation: Roof Ventilation.
Storms inside the loop
Hail and wind still hit inside Loop 410. Bruised shingles, lifted edges, and failed chimney flashings are common finds after spring storms. Stay off the roof; we document damage with photos and can meet your adjuster. You file the claim; we do not waive or rebate deductibles. See Hail Damage Roof Repair, Wind Damage Roof Repair, and Insurance Claims.
Repair vs replace
Minor issues — a few tabs, a pipe boot, a short flashing run — are often a repair. When the field is brittle, layered, or hail-bruised across slopes, replacement is the straight answer. We photograph soft decking before we change it out.
Permits and work hours
The City of Castle Hills says permits are not required for routine maintenance including minor roof repairs. A full re-roof is different — the city’s fee schedule lists roof / re-roof fees, and the contractor (or homeowner doing their own work) obtains the permit through the Permit Office. Work started without a required permit can double the fee. We confirm your scope with the city before we start.
Contractor work hours published with city permit materials are typically weekdays and limited Saturday hours, with no work on Sundays or city holidays — we schedule inside those rules.
How a job usually runs
We start with a free on-roof inspection and photos. Castle Hills homes often hide problems at chimney cricket flashings, step flashings along dormers, and old layers left from a prior overlay. We call those out before you commit.
On a replacement we tear off to the deck, replace soft wood, install synthetic underlayment, and put down ice-and-water shield in the valleys. Most straightforward reroofs finish in a day. You walk the finished roof with us. Debris is hauled away — important on the narrower streets inside the enclave.
We are licensed with the City of San Antonio and other municipalities where permits are required, and we carry insurance. Call or text (210) 418-ROOF between 7 AM and 7 PM.
